Featured Exhibit at the Museum of East Texas

Selected works of D. M. Bates, a Lufkin based artist, will be exhibited at the Museum of East Texas from February 16 through May 25, 2010. The Museum will host an Opening Reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2010. All are welcome to attend.

Bates has been a full-time artist since 1992. His works have been shown throughout the country, and in 2009, he had exhibitions at Nomades Del Arte in Dallas, Texas; Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Port Aransas Coastal Paintout, Port Aransas, Texas; Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction, Rist Canyon, Colorado; and Salon International, San Antonio, Texas.

Bates is a member of the Oil Painters of America and is the co-founder of the Outdoor Painters Society. Additionally, he has been listed as an “Artist to Watch” in Southwest Art Magazine.

The works at the Museum of East Texas include both still life and landscapes, created in oil on canvas and oil on board. Bates explains that, “Although I am an artist who paints primarily from life, my goal is not to reproduce nature, but to faithfully reproduce the effect nature has on me. If I can evoke a similar response in the viewer then I have successfully shared the experience.” For more information on D.M. Bates, visit his website at www.dmbates.com.

Featured Exhibit at the Museum of East Texas

Selected works of Mark Rawls will be exhibited at the Museum of East Texas from March 2 through August 30, 2010.

The Museum will host an Opening Reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2010. All are welcome to attend.

MARK RAWLS (1962 – 1991)

Museum of East Texas Permanent Collections

The end of the twentieth century saw a scattering of ideas and a culmination of a culture diverse in its thinking and confused in its direction. However, a few young artists held on to their attachment to the land and their devotion to spiritualism. Marc Rawls, while living in Louisiana’s bayou lands, spent his summers creating mud and stick effigies that were forever lost in the meandering streams formed by the torrential rains of the humid southland. The area of Louisiana where he played barefoot in the bayou mud stretches around cypress-sprigged Lake Bistineau in Northwest Louisiana. The rural customs of the bayou people, the way they idled their time and the lackadaisical attitude of these humble people would leave an indelible mark on the young sculptor-painter.
