LUFKIN, TX. It’s a reunion of sorts – as alumni from the 1956-1978 Stan Kenton Orchestras come together touring the United States and the world, to entertain and educate and keep the Stan Kenton legacy alive. The 19 piece band includes some of the finest young jazz players around, along with the Kenton alumni. You'll hear some of the well-known music of The Stan Kenton Orchestra, along with fresh new material written in the Kenton Style. This extraordinary jazz jam session takes place Sunday April 12th, 2:30 pm at the Temple Theater on the Angelina College campus. General Admission tickets are $12.50 each for adults and $5 for students. In a first ever partnership, Angelina Arts Alliance and Angelina College are proud to bring The Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra to Lufkin. 2014-2015 Season sponsors are First Bank and Trust East Texas and Georgia Pacific.
Orchestra leader Mike Vax has led a big band, off and on for the past 45 years, and his credits include being first trumpet, soloist and road manager of the original Stan Kenton Orchestra. He has produced and directed music for over 40 jazz festivals and performed workshops for more than 2500 high schools, colleges and universities all over the world. “This is a rare opportunity,” said Larry Greer, Angelina College Division of Fine Arts, Instructor Music Theory, Jazz Band, Classic and Jazz Guitar, “to be able to hear jazz musicians of this caliber, and level of expertise is unique - not to mention their major historical influence on West Coast Style Jazz.” Also featured will be the ACC Big Band directed by Larry Greer. Come to Angelina College, Temple Theater for a rare experience – a Sunday afternoon, listening to some of the finest musicians in the country--from the original innovators of West Coast Style Jazz!
