The Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau would like to wish Lufkin and Angelina County a happy new year.
A new year brings new beginnings, and with that we would like to invite you all to join us for the 2016 Pines Presents series that kicks off Jan. 21 with Melinda Doolittle and her jazz trio. This soul–stirring songstress is known as a flawless vocalist with irresistible artistry and effortless style which has compelled her audiences to keep listening. Doolittle was tone deaf as a child. Her choir teacher would plead with her not to sing, but just silently move her mouth. Undaunted, her love of singing drove her to enter a talent show in the seventh grade where she stunned the audience with her miraculously spot-on vocals and beautiful voice, and she never looked back.
Over the years, she has become a highly sought after background vocalist singing for musical icons including Michael McDonald, Aretha Franklin, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Aaron Neville and Jonny Lang, just to name a few. She became a household name during season six of ‘‘American Idol’’ where she was named third place — winning over the hearts of America with her stunning powerhouse vocals as well as her charm and charisma. Come enjoy songs from her first two albums as well as old classic favorites and hear why NY Times calls Doolittle one of the most “phenomenally gifted” singers in years. Tickets can be purchased online at thepineslufkin.com or by calling 633-0359.
Other happenings at the historic Pines Theater this month is a showing of the classic movie, “West Side Story” on Jan. 30. Tickets for the Pines’ movies are just $5 each and can be purchased online at thepineslufkin.com or at the door.
