In the late 1970s, Lufkin, like many of our small Texas downtowns, was in a serious state of decline. The automobile, suburban housing and the growth of local and regional shopping centers greatly reduced the traditional role of downtowns as the principal center of economic activity.
In the early 1980s Lufkin community leaders felt it was imperative to save downtown. Lufkin became a part of the Main Street organization in 1983. We wanted to grow and ensure a safe and beautiful Downtown for everyone.
We have several annual events throughout the year which attract thousands, among these are the Annual SpringFest, Downtown Halloween Trick-or-Treat, Heritage Festival, Flag Day and the Lufkin Christmas Parade.
